Odisha: Three days long Convention on Ending Violence against Children concluded - See more at: http
The three day long convention on Ending Violence against children at Bhubaneswar organised by Odisha Alliance for Child Rights and National Action and Coordination Group to end violence against children in partnership with Odisha State Commission for Protection of Child Rights , came to an end with children and adults sharing their observations , hopes , aspiration and concerns before a larger media . Over the last three days children and adults had worked closely on issues that affect children the most like , child protection , child marriage , Child trafficking , child labour , migration, children children safety in educational institution .They also discussed on the safety and security of children in disaster situation . Children by their natural physiological and social position are high on the vulnerability factor.Even during regular times their dependency on others and the instinct to be influenced by others heightens this vulnerability , children observed in their consultation . This confirms the fact that the vulnerability of children is much higher in a disaster situation, be it natural or man made . While discussing on the issue of child marriage in the state which was affecting lives of children at large , it was learned that the matter of child marriage in Odisha was least discussed .Many communities practice child marriage soon after the girl child attains puberty .Further it has been a higher concern in district with high women illiteracy . As a result of consultation both adults and children came up with their well documented recommendations which were shared before the invited guests . Children , in their recommendations had pointed out the challenges of reaching of the benefits of government schemes to the grassroots in addition to the lack of accessibility to children even when they reach the point of implementation .They had observed that there was a need by the system to see that the provisions were reaching the children . Promotion of 1098 , the phone number of ChildLine be made more extensive by creating awareness on the service at the anganwadi & school level , they felt . While child labours were rescued from different places , the system had no adequate space & provision to rehabilitate them properly .This was the reason why children return to become child labour .They suggested for opening centres for rehabilitation at district level with support to be there with the children till they were in the development process without compromising their childhood opportunities .Children came up with suggestion that there was a need of opening of child protection committee at the village level with children being must members in them . Efforts of children and adults working together in realising a greater reality was appreciated by all including the guests on the dais .Addressing the valedictory session Sj. Subash Singh ,Chairman, Building and Construction workers welfare board emphasised on the spending of MP ,MLA Lad fund for building school infrastructure. The valedictory function was presided by Ranjan Mumar Mohanty ,Chairman,Odisha Alliance for child Rights and addressed by Dr. Chiranjeev Kakoty,Cairmaan,NACG-EVAC, Sj.Prasanth Reddy,IAS,Director,Social welfare,Women and children Development Department,Mr.Chudamani Seth,IAS,Director, Elementary Education. Budget for children need to be increased in State Budget- Odisha Alliance for Child Rights
Budget for children need to be increased in State Budget- Odisha Alliance for Child Rights
In Odisha as per the recent census, children constitute 38.8% of total population. They represent not just Odisha’s future, but are integral to securing Odisha’s present. Yet development indicators continue to show slow progress towards securing their welfare and delivering their basic rights. Hence, it is important to both protect and increase expenditures to promote child rights viewed by the participants and speakers in the state consultation on ‘child budgeting’ today organised by Odisha Alliance for Child Rights(OACR), an alliance of child rights groups and networks at Red Cross Bhawan

Consultation Workshop on Positive Parenting & Non-Violent Discipline in School Situations
Corporal Punishment is a social stigma in India since time immemorial. Government of India enacted Legislations, out of those the RCFCE Act 2009 and Juvenile Justice (Care & Protection) Act, 2006 are most important. But law cannot change the tradition and mindset of people unless it is accepted by all human consensuses. Numbers of people believe in the necessity of giving corporal punishment at a considerate level to make children disciplined. Due to heavy pressure by parents on children for education in home situations and corporal punishment in schools, a good number of children are remaining out of schools, dropping out and finally engaged in labour force.

Everyone has the Responsibility towards the Aged-said by Sulata Deo,Chairperson,OSSWB
EVERY ONE HAS THE RESPONSIBILITY TOWARDS THE AGED:-said by Sulata Deo, Chairperson, (OrissaStateSocial Welfare Board)
Bhubaneshwar dt 28/11: A workshop on “Rights of the Aged” was organized by the PECUC in collaboration with the Help Age India at Red Cross Bhawan, Bhubaneswar.
With a warm welcome to all the participants, dignitaries and resource persons Smt. Anuradha Mohanty, Programme Director of People’s cultural Centre , PECUC initiated the process with delivering the base idea of the workshop. She put that a demographic revolution is underway throughout the world. Today, world-wide, there are around 600 million persons aged 60 years and over; this total will double by 2025 and will reach virtually two billion by 2050 - the vast majority of them in the developing world. In context to India there are 77 million older person in 2001 (males – 37 million, female 40 million) which will be more than double in 2025. As in Odisha a total of 22, 80,956 older people are above the age of 60 as per the 2001 census, out of which 11,53,092 i.e 50.56 % lives in rural areas whereas 11,27,866 i.e 49.44% are the inhabitant of Urban area. The rights of aged persons can be broken down into three main categories: protection, participation and image. Protection refers to securing the physical, psychological and emotional safety of elderly persons with regard to their unique vulnerability to abuse and ill treatment. Participation refers to the need to establish a greater and more active role for older persons in society. Image refers to the need to define a more positive, less degrading and discriminatory idea of who elderly persons are and what they are capable of doing. She told that every one should respect their parents at the age they need care and protection from their children and if some how these rights of aged people are violated, we should relocate these issues in a greater concern
